I feel the same about kiwis!! They are a lot more reserved. I was shocked when I moved to the US and how friendly and warm people are here.

It's interesting though when you see beyond the "politeness" and really learn about tatemae and honne. I personally prefer how we in Aotearoa are more upfront, albeit a little shy, as it's easier for me to tell where I stand and gauge another person.

When I visited Japan I also noticed the overly politeness of people and in my opinion it felt “too much”. Like there’s a social pressure to be super nice, which gets tiring to workers (I’ve done hospitality jobs before). Also because I prefer to be left alone while shopping… so when I went to the mall it was a bit draining to see all the stores vendors greeting everyone even when you’re just looking around. 😅 I believe there’s a middle ground between being nice but also not so intense (I feel like they have to do this so they can do more sales).

Reeeaaalllly haha crazy, I used to always say hello to all the Chinese they never really would. Japanese definitely seem very polite!

hahaha 🤣😂 it's because they may not be from NZ. We all live overseas 😂😆 or like you said in smaller towns. If your living in Auckland, a lot changed.
