You cannot control every result. You can improve the decisions behind the test. The counting-cards comparison in this clip is a metaphor for preparation. I am talking about understanding creative, reading the data and learning how an account responds to changes. None of that removes uncertainty, but it gives you something more useful than hoping for a lucky result. Here is a way to put that into practice: 1. Learn how the creative communicates. Ask what the opening promises, which audience it speaks to and whether the rest of the ad delivers on that promise. 2. Know what the data can tell you. Separate a signal about attention from a result about leads or purchases, and keep the campaign goal visible. 3. Record changes in the account. A short log of what changed and when makes a result easier to interpret than relying on memory after the fact. 4. Compare expectations with outcomes. Notice where your reasoning was useful and where the result surprised you; both can suggest another test. 5. Stay within a defined testing plan. Preparation does not make results certain, and an encouraging signal is not a reason to ignore the budget or the question you set out to answer. Use the checklist in this description to prepare a test. The gambling language is an analogy; the actual work is creative judgment, analysis and measured decisions.
