@kayli.kiing: This post is not meant to bash on a country that I absolutely love and clearly spend so much time in. Indonesia is one of my favorite places to travel and even after 4+ months of time spent here, I’ll continue to come back. With that said, I feel like it’s important to show the sides that aren’t often included. Here’s some more info about a few of the main points… ✨trash✨ I recently found out about @Sungai Watch . This is a nonprofit that has the mission of stopping plastic from going into the ocean. Right now they have a team running across Java to raise awareness and money. They host cleanups, install trash barriers, and clean rivers. So far they have collected 4,521,026 KG of plastic, installed 368 barriers, cleaned 260 villages, and led 1,895 community cleanups. ✨how to support local✨ Restaurants labeled with “Warung” are often locally owned and operated. Sometimes they don’t have a name, but are a side restaurant or food stall. “Homestays” are typically owned & operated as well. A lot of times I find them by looking at google maps and checking the reviews. Booking.com does tend to be a main method of how you can book them, otherwise I find the WhatsApp number and text them to secure a room. ✨how to find good surf coaches✨ If you’re very new to surfing, you will want to know all the safety BEFORE getting in the water. The coach should be teaching you how to protect your head when you fall, how to manage your board so it doesn’t hit you or the people around you (turtle roll), where to paddle out of the impact zone, how to avoid getting hit, how to avoid collisions, how to signal for help, & more. If you need a rec… I am biased & will always say Insider Surf is the best because that’s where I learned and I truly think they are the prime example of teaching you correctly. #travelindonesia

I think it’s also our responsibility at visitors to these beautiful places to be mindful of our waste, small acts by a 100 people has a big effect on the world ✨

11 years ago I traveled West Java to Central Java and saw so much trash. This year I traveled East Java and was surprised by the very little to no amount of trash. I will soon go back to Central and East Java.
