I didn’t even understand.. nursing school makes it seem like you just read orders, follow them no matter what, and pass meds. It doesn’t prepare you for ANYTHING else. Doctors depending on YOU. Your assessment skills, ability to pick up on changes, your ability to critically think a situation through, to recommend treatments or scans or labs. Being the person at the bedside 24/7 and being blamed for everything. Having a doctor put in a med, a doctor of pharmacy approving the dose/med, but it’s an unsafe dose, you give it and it’s your 🍑 (we absolutely need to be researching unfamiliar meds/normal doses!!!), but we get paid way less, get less schooling yet expected to know what they know. Plus the 0 lunch breaks/pee breaks, screamed at by family members, nothing we do is right.. it’s a rewarding career with SO much growth opportunity but it’s exhausting.

Then we get home at 8:15-8:30, shower, shove our faces with something small, and try to get 6 hrs of sleep before waking up at 5am again😅😩

We also can’t show up and start the shift at 7, at least not in my experience. We have to be clocked in by 6:45 for pre shift huddle, a get together before the shift hand off 🫠

What???? If I was throwing up sick on shift they’d 100% let me leave 😭 I think that’s just your unit or hospital . One time they begged me to go home because I was so dizzy

My shifts are 13 hours. I work on a stoke floor where we do a shift change NIHSS, so it can take awhile 😅 by the time I get home I have been away for 14 hours.

There are over 100 specialties in nursing. Not all of them are 12 hour shifts. It’s not even 12 hours, it is usually 12.5 hours you scheduled for. I work 4 10 hour shifts. I have also worked 5 8 hour shifts, which I absolutely hated. That’s what I was trying to remember.

When I first started nursing… documentation was paper. Night shift. 6-7 patients, med-surg. Too much going on that I couldn’t START charting until 7am. Leaving at 9-10am was normal, to return to work to start again at 7pm. And no one believes me. That’s cool, I lived it. It happened. Believe it or not, I don’t care. But that’s why I burned out REALLY early.

Even worst when your patient has a rapid response during or even like 5 mins before shift change, gotta stay even longer

I can’t call off late, I can’t “clear my schedule and move my meetings” to accommodate things. My husband also a RN at the time (OR). Asked if I was having an affair because I was getting home an hour after my shift ended. I explained my shift ended at 11, still needed to give report. Walk down a flight of stairs, walk to the parking lot and then drive 35 mins

I’m gonna preface this with “I truly love my mother in law (because she’s truly a saint)” BUT I work night shift as a NICU nurse and I got home one morning and my in laws stayed over with my kids because my husband was away for work. I told my mother in law that I was so tired and she goes “I’m surprised you’re always tired after shift because aren’t you sleeping while the babies are sleeping?” I decided at that moment was not the time for me to respond so I took a nap first and then discussed what I actually do later in the day 😅

Our hospital lets us leave if we are sick under the notion that we give report and overload another nurse to 6 pts. No one is coming to relieve you unless by the grace of god we have a single resource nurse to pull into ratio.
