Driscoll's — the world's largest berry company, controlling roughly one-third of the US berry market and two-thirds of all US organic berries — is under fire after independent testing by Mamavation found PFAS
Driscoll's — the world's largest berry company, controlling roughly one-third of the US berry market and two-thirds of all US organic berries — is under fire after independent testing by Mamavation found PFAS "forever chemicals" and pesticide residues in their conventional strawberries. The lab flagged 302 ppb of THPI, a metabolite of captan, a fungicide the EPA originally classified as a probable human carcinogen before reclassifying it in 2004 — a reclassification that was funded by the pesticide industry itself. Driscoll's farms in California's Pajaro Valley spray over 1 million pounds of fumigants annually, including chloropicrin (originally deployed as a chemical weapon in World War I) and 1,3-dichloropropene, both used to sterilize the soil before planting. The real impact is being felt by the communities living next to these fields. Santa Cruz County, where Driscoll's is headquartered, now ranks 2nd in California for pediatric cancer — with childhood cancer rates 38% higher than the state average. Pesticides are sprayed within feet of elementary schools and family homes, often during school hours. Activists, including labor icon Dolores Huerta, have led protests demanding Driscoll's transition its local farms to organic — pointing out that the company already grows organically in other regions but chooses not to in its own backyard. Despite mounting evidence, Driscoll's continues to claim full compliance with state and federal pesticide laws. The question isn't whether they're following the rules. It's why the rules allow this in the first place. #driscolls #pesticides
