During his address at the 80th UN General Assembly Debate in New York on September 24, 2025, Kenyan President William Ruto called for reforms to the UN Security Council, arguing that Africa’s absence from permanent membership is no longer sustainable. Ruto stressed that granting African nations permanent seats and veto power should not be viewed as a favour, but as a necessary step toward making the UN more representative, fair and credible. He maintained that African countries should have the same rights and privileges on the Security Council as the United States, United Kingdom, Russia, China and France.
