New Ontario Driving Rules Starting 1st September 2026: 1. Distracted Driving Costs More: If you're caught texting, calling, or looking at your phone while driving, drivers found guilty of distracted driving face $490 fines and three demerit points. Drivers with G1 or G2 licenses can have their permits suspended on the spot. 2. Wait for Full Pedestrian Crossing: Drivers must now wait until pedestrians have completely crossed the road at pedestrian crossovers and school crossings before proceeding. About half of all fatal traffic accidents involving pedestrians occur at intersections. This new law is designed to make roads safer for pedestrians. 3. Give Cyclists One Metre Space: Drivers must give cyclists at least one metre of room whenever possible when passing them. If you open your car door into the path of a cyclist without checking, you face $365 fines and three demerit points. Cyclist safety is now a legal requirement. 4. Slow Down for Emergency Vehicles: As of September 1, drivers must slow down and move into the next lane whenever they see a stopped emergency vehicle with red and blue lights tlashing. This rule also applies to tow trucks with amber lights. Breaking this rule costs $490 and three demerit points. 5. Same Penalties for Impaired Driving: Those caught driving under the influence of drugs now face the same penalties as drunk drivers. These include three to 90 day license suspensions and vehicle impoundment for a week. More than 45 percent of drivers killed in Ontario had drugs or alcohol in their systems.
