It argued that a socialist revolution could not remain limited to one country or stop after achieving basic political change. Instead, revolution had to continue developing socially, economically, and internationally. Trotsky believed that in less industrialized countries, the working class could take power even before capitalism had fully developed. But he also argued that a socialist state could not survive in isolation. According to him, socialism depended on international cooperation between revolutionary movements, especially in advanced industrial countries. This is where Trotsky sharply disagreed with Joseph Stalin. Stalin promoted the idea of **“socialism in one country,”** claiming that the Soviet Union could successfully build socialism on its own, even without worldwide revolution. Trotsky rejected this idea completely. He believed that an isolated socialist state would face economic weakness, military pressure, and political degeneration. In his view, without revolutions spreading internationally, socialism would eventually become bureaucratic and authoritarian rather than genuinely democratic and revolutionary. For Trotsky, socialism was therefore inherently international.
