even if they get under my skin, they don't get the satisfaction of seeing or knowing it. move on to the next I guess, my lexapro dose is too high for that mess nowadays 🤷‍♀️

No fr, been in the restaurant industry for about 10 years. It’s never that serious- it’s food. Reorienting them to the situation can be a good option. People really like to spiral for no reason. Keeping a positive attitude is major.

my first job was an ice cream shop and this dude was being rude I was like man what’s wrong with this guy. Then watching him sit down alone and eat his ice cream I was like man he’s just a human like all of us. He’s probably had a bad day or is dealing with something upsetting. Watchin him enjoy his ice cream just reminded me that he used to be a young lad too. Idk that’s just a core memory for me that led me to being empathetic to even the worst of people that I encounter in life. So that keeps me going as I continue in the service industry.

Very well said. Take it with a grain of salt and even when you’re not doing “good enough” kill them with kindness. Try to fix the problem anyways. Some people you can’t make happy. I had a lady that noticed I made a cosmo with Harle Quin instead of Cointreau and blew my mind and bosses mind, while using a house made cranberry. And yes auto correct won’t let me spell that correctly.

I love a challenge like flipping a customers attitude I feel so satisfied when it works 😆 i usually go for first acknowledging whatever service issue they're frustrated about in a way that takes accountability (simple as, "I'm sorry I mixed that up") and if that and some food doesn't take the hangry edge off and they still have a complaint it's kinda wild how much just saying things like "I hear ya" followed by a "how would you like me to make this better for you" vs a defensive response can take their edge off. if you look them in the eye and give them your full attention a lot of times they'll still tip (especially if the issue was more food related than service related)

totally agree with everything that you said. last night I had the perfect example. an older couple came in and got one entree and a cup of soup. at the end of the meal I tried to get them change and they had shoved the checkbook back behind the salt and pepper where I couldn't reach it. when I probed, they insisted that it was fine then practically ran out the front door as soon as I turned my back on them. I went and picked up the check to find a note written on the back that said "sorry honey food sucked". But, hey, what are you supposed to do? they had every opportunity to say something and I would have made it right but instead they just needed to feel in control so they took their frustration out on my tip. sometimes I think people want a feeling of control and tipping is the one and only time in life when they can choose whatever amount they want to pay. One thing that will help you keep your sanity when serving is understanding that it all comes out in the wash and that for every bad tip there's a great tip.

I have found that validating those people can actually go a long way. Theres a limit to what we can fix but I think a lot of them just want to feel heard.

just tell them, "I'm not going to contribute to the illusion you're trying to maintain"

This is why I cook for my difficult customers so I know they have their food correctly made but it doesn’t matter sometimes
