The film's non-linear structure was not a gimmick. The color sequences run in reverse chronological order, the black and white sequences run forward, and the two timelines meet at the end. The effect puts the audience in exactly the same position as Leonard, always just as lost as he is. The concept originated from Nolan's brother Jonathan, who pitched the idea first. Christopher finished the film before Jonathan had even published the short story it was based on, which meant the screenplay qualified as an original and earned an Oscar nomination. Studios passed on distributing it for nearly a year. It eventually earned $40 million on a $9 million budget and is now preserved in the United States National Film Registry.
