Very traumatizing. Anyone can lose their jobs any day with no notice for no reason and you lose access to any healthcare for yourself and your family right along with your income.

I didn’t think anything about at will employment as an adjunct professor: I totally trusted the morals and intellectual integrity of my institution and I loved my job, so I did it well with enthusiasm. And then a student told me and two other female professors that a male professor assaulted them…after going to Title 9, all three of us were laid off the next day. We went to a lawyer to talk about the retaliation, and that’s when we found out the real reason that colleges rely so heavily on at-will employment with a clause that said we could be laid off for no reason at all. We had no case. They didn’t need a reason to lay us off. They never laid off the male professor.
