The Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR (often called the CLK-GTR or AMG CLK GTR) is one of the rarest and most legendary homologation specials ever built—a true road-legal race car from the late 1990s. Background and Purpose Mercedes-Benz (in partnership with AMG and HWA) developed it primarily as a Group GT1 race car for the 1997 FIA GT Championship to compete against rivals like the McLaren F1 GTR and Porsche 911 GT1. It was designed as a near-pure racing machine first, with the minimum required road-legal versions produced secondarily to meet homologation rules (which required building a certain number of street cars). It dominated the 1997 and 1998 FIA GT Championships, winning drivers’ and constructors’ titles before Mercedes moved on to other prototypes like the CLK LM and CLR. The road cars were built in 1998–1999 at Affalterbach. Production and Variants Total production: Around 28 units (2 prototypes, ~20 coupés, 6 roadsters). These are not based mechanically on the regular Mercedes CLK (C208); they share only minor styling cues like headlights, taillights, and grille. The CLK GTR is a mid-engined monster with almost nothing in common underneath. Design and Engineering Chassis: Carbon-fiber monocoque with aluminum honeycomb elements (built with help from Lola). Very stiff and lightweight for the era. Body: Aggressive, aerodynamic design with massive rear wing, wide fenders, roof-mounted air intakes/NACA ducts, and a low-slung profile (height around 1,100 mm). It looks like a slammed, widened supercar with race-car proportions. Suspension: Double wishbones with pull-rod coilovers—race-derived and adjustable. Brakes: Carbon-composite discs. Transmission: 6-speed sequential manual (paddle or stick, race-style). The road versions added some comforts like air conditioning, ABS, an audio system, leather/Alcantara/tartan interiors, and luggage bins, but they retain a raw, purposeful feel with minimal sound deadening compared to typical luxury cars. Engine and Performance (Road Version) The road cars used a stroked version of the Mercedes M120 V12 (developed with Ilmor): Displacement: ~6.9 liters (6,898 cc).
