How is rent a fixed cost? Rents have increased 100% over the last 20 years. So that $2000 rent today will be $4000 in 20 years. Thats not fixed.

I don’t know about you, but I’d rather be sipping something tropical sounding on the Amalfi Coast than hosting (yet another) Thanksgiving and pretending that I enjoy talking to anyone for 13 hours straight. Again, maybe that’s just me. ;)

Downsize the big house to a small condo in a high rental area on the Gulf. Renting out during the peak months will pay for the entire condo, fees, hoa, etc. Travel during those months, live free at the condo during the off peak months. Invest the large capital from the big house to fund the Travel.

My wife and I are considering this. Our house has appreciated approximately $200k n 4 years. Why leave this on the table for someone else?

We rented for a few years - had to move every 2 years as landlords decided to sell

Depends on where you live too… CA has very high rent, more than mortgage

The problem with renting is the COST...it is fixed but constantly goes up..making it potentially a moving nightmare

I love my small paid for home, I have a garden, drink coffee on my deck, enjoy my German Shepherds. Maybe an apartment when I am close to death.

Rent is not a fixed cost. It goes up every year. Meanwhile your friend that bought a house - 15 years later, they actually own something.

Rent is not fixed. It goes up based on owners need for tax increases, repairs, and rental rates are set rather than negotiated

Renting short term is significantly more expensive than long term (of course). If one rents short term “off season” it makes a big difference. And, basically being a nomad, you have to either get rid of most of your stuff or pay to store it. Lastly, most rentals have a fatal flaw that no reviewers mention. You have to be pretty tolerant of places you can only make small changes to (like have bowls in addition to plates). You swap inconveniences for home ownership for inconveniences with not ever owning where you live.

How can you travel around the world all year long on $24,000 a year? Rents increase by $100 a month. If you live 10 years you’ll be paying $1,000 more a month. Renting usually requires a signed lease. Short-term leases are more expensive. Where I live, apartments rent for about $3,000/month. This math ain’t mathing
