@creativeflairhq: Ireland just made something permanent that the UK still won't even consider. A basic income for 2,000 artists. €325 a week. About £275. Every week, for three years. Just for being a working artist. The pilot started in 2022. In February it became permanent. Ireland is the first country in the world to do this. For every €1 invested, society got €1.39 back. The net cost dropped by a third through taxes paid and welfare saved. Recipients produced more work, had greater life satisfaction, lower anxiety. The UK's nearest equivalent is Developing Your Creative Practice. £2,000 to £10,000 per artist. Project specific. Competitive. Currently paused. Ireland spends €18 million a year on artists' basic salaries. The UK spends roughly £14 million on project grants you might not get. The gap isn't the budget. It's the philosophy. Ireland's policy says artists are workers. The UK's policy says artists are hobbyists. That's why so many UK artists feel stuck. #emergingartist #ukartists #artworld #basicincome #creativeflair

It's a lottery, you have to be a professional working artist, and it's taxable.
So don't all rush at once
Many thousands applied
That said I am an advocate for Universal Basic Income generally and think it has to happen as Ai and robotics become more capable of undertaking many existing jobs

The basic income for the artist is a living wage plus the arts council of Ireland offer artist bursary’s and project awards as well. An artist can be awarded the basic income and also apply for arts council funding on top of that

Erm nope. Scandinavia has been doing it for ages. In Norway you can get a working grant that you could get till retirement.

It is amazing that our government has extended the basic income for the arts. Seeing as it has been proven through the very successful pilot to generate more than it costs- they hopefully will extend it further. There were 9000 applications for the 2000 who received it on the pilot. I heard there were almost 3 times the amount of applications for the 2926-2029 scheme. It’s awarded on a lotto basis to artists who apply and who meet the criteria. If you get it for 3 years- you cannot apply for the following 3 (not counting the pilot.

@Ronja: it’s actually a lot of PR. It’s not what it seems to be coming from an Irish artist here it’s not permanent. It’s a glorified three-year grant that is given on a lottery basis as they haven’t expanded the amount of artists that are given it and it’s only given to 2000 artists every three years and that’s covering visual artists writers circus performers, dancers, opera singers musicians everyone so it’s extremely difficult to get and when you get it, you can only have it for three years and after it’s gone, you can’t apply for it for another three years

and the pople.in charge of the "development of your creative practices" also got put under government review for helping the artists that grant was created for as well which makes it even worse. they got told to change it, to essentially be less snoppy and they didn't. out Arts council rep here literally called most of us at grass roots level finger painters as her version of art of ballet and fine art. so the system created to help us was rigged against us as well.

I'm from the Netherlands. I've only been able to develop myself as an artist because I live off disability benefits. Now I can at least say "I'm an artist" instead of "I'm unemployed", which I w good for my mental health
