I’ll head there next, I have to check a blood sugar and then I can bring that to you, I have to message the doctor something and then I’ll be back. I was taught never give a time. I’ll say I’ll try my best to be back here at this time but also explain every patients safety is a priority and if someone is crashing or fall risk getting out of bed that that is the priority just like if it was happening to them. I encourage them to use the call light, as sometimes I may be stuck unexpectedly in a room with a turn that turned into a total bed change, someone else may be able to meet their needs.

A. You’re not on a timer “I’ll be there in a minute” or “give me a minute” are common idiomatic phrases. Like “just a second” these people were being passively rude B. Do not apologize or let people talk to you that way. You can give a little laugh and admit it was more than a minute but a very brief explanation is enough and then a turn towards need. What does the patient need? C. My go to is “absolutely, I will be in there just as soon as I can/in a few moments/after I check on my other patient”.

Not sure if it’s the pregnancy hormones but that just pmo. I would’ve responded to that with “it’s a figure of speech that has been around for ages, I wouldn’t hold a busy nurse to that timeframe ☺️” people can be so unrealistic 🥲 anyways, sometimes I do say I’ll be back in a minute and sometimes I say I’ll be back as soon as I can.

I always ask if it’s urgent. If they say no. Then I’ll say “I’m getting report, let me look at the patients chart and I’ll be there after I prioritize my assignment.” I’ve never had complaints, if anything it makes me look more organized even though I’m not 😅
