Italy is another difficult country, strongly separated by the political right and left. Most ultras in Italy therefore chose to stay strictly apolitical and ban any political ideologies from their stands, or at least expressing it. Those clubs who are frequently associated with a specific political view are also usually mixed in its core, with a few tiny groups who don’t go with the main stream political orientation. So while you could argue that 95% of Italian ultras are mixed, regarding politics, I only put those in mixed, where it was hard to tell whether they’re right wing or left wing, because if too many different groups. One more thing I’d like to say, is that a person that’s never been in Italy, it is hard to do research in every relevant club in Italy, most sources are unreliable or old. I did try my best to make this list as accurate as possible. Regarding whether politics actually belong in football, I left a comment in the comment section with my personal view, so if you’re interested, maybe go check that out. So now to some of my more controversial decisions, which J would like to explain before I get huge backlash in my comment section. Atalanta Bergamo (mixed): While I am aware that Atalanta was founded as a left wing club, and its supporters are traditionally left wing, I felt like their Curva Nord has been under a process of depoliticisation, which might’ve not been complete yet entirely, but I know that the goal is to make Atalanta Bergamo apolitical. FC Torino (left wing): You could basically argue anything here. I know that Torino Hooligans could even be considered far right, I also know that “Ultras Torina” are rather left-leaning. According to the latest source I could find, Torino seems to be rather left-leaning at the moment, but I could be wrong here. This is also the one, I am most unsure about. Sampdoria (apolitical): Sampdoria is also a difficult case. I know that historically, they were some of the most left wing ultras in Italy. Just from what I’ve heard, I decided that nowadays, they are trying to build a more apolitical and football-based image around them. But since their actual fans haven’t changed that much, you could call them left-leaning with tendencies to the middle. Vicenza (Mixed): I found out about one explicitly far right group (Ultras 1993) and multiple left leaning groups (Boys, Brigata, Venceremos). So I chose mixed. Empoli (left wing): after doing more research, I found out that their Che Guevara flags have been removed, and their stands now identify as apolitical, so this probably would’ve been a better choice here. Trento (far right): Nuova Guardia keep publicly stating that they are not far right, but their actions (just look them up), as well as police records speak another language. Perugia (left wing): Brigata Ultrà don’t exist anymore (since January 2025), so their stands are now dominated by the political left. AS Roma (right wing): Although there exist some left wing groups, recently their right wing and even far right ultras have taken the upper hand in the stands, so it seems to me. #italia #ultras #political #hooligans #rightwing
