Canadian MD and lawyer here: there are rights provided to patients for involuntary psychiatric holds and I’m confident this will be cleared up (either in favour of the patient not requiring further evaluation or that he in fact meets criteria and may require voluntary treatment). Remember: hold does not by itself involve treatment, just an evaluation to determine if grounds remain to continue an involuntary hold longer. People have the right to a lawyer and if the detention is later determined to be wrong, there is a complaints process and of course potential legal remedies. It’s fair to follow the story, question the evidence, etc, just be aware that psychiatric holds for evaluation are a necessary part of keeping society safe and there are safeguards in the system for abuse of process etc.
