Whew, my mom brags that I was a “good baby” because I didn’t cry or fuss too much. I know it’s because I stopped crying.

It's really awful to know this pattern and see it play out when you work in pediatrics & famy practice. You see a family come in for the kid, & the parent is dysregulated. They're upset they got a call from the nurse, or had to leave work, or come to the clinic on their ONE day off. They'll say stuff like, "This one DECIDED to get sick/hurt" in a way that their tone does not indicate a joke or sarcasm. The kids face changes. They know. They sit & try to fix it. Try for a bid of connection. They offer to help fill out the paperwork, show their mom something funny on their phone, or tell them a story or what happened that lead to the injury and how they felt. The parent rebuffed them every time until they get angry and tell them to just stop or be quiet. The kid looks so defeated. They slump n back in their chair; look at nothing but the open air or retreat nose deep into their phone. Sometimes the parent realizes what they've done and initiates repair. A lot of times they dont. And another kid has a moment of vulnerability in illness or injury where their parent offered no emotional safety for them. You see the thousand yard stares in those kids eyes. Its haunting to see it happen every day

I can very specifically remember laying in the floor of my bedroom just thinking to myself “tomorrow I’ll look back on this and it will be already done. I just have to make it to tomorrow.” Now repeat day after day for years. That’s how I got through things.

my mom said I was a good baby who didn't really cry. as I got a bit older (4-7ish) I did a lot of anticipatory favors for my mom and when that didn't work I would escape into my own imagination

Intermittent nurturing followed by shutting down was both confusing and also kept the hope alive and the grief when the primary caregiver is unresponsive or angry for being bothered. I recognize that my mother was severely mentally ill but that doesn’t change the impact over time.

I used to self harm. That was the only thing I felt was mine. That I had full control over. When my mom found out that my brother was doing it, I told her that I used to as well. She looked at me and said. Well obviously you figured it out so I’m not worried about you. I STILL struggle with urges. I just don’t understand the selective empathy and care

I’d love to hear more about how one can identify and meet their own needs as an adult, especially with no support system, no one to attune with, no one to connect with that heals some of that unmet childhood need

I went to my mom one day crying because I felt so very alone and sad and asked if I could have a pet even a small one because I desperately just wanted something to love me back and she just laughed at me and said nope never 🥹👌

I hear a lot about dissociation from trauma and cptsd. I definitely do this as a way to zone out and just not do anything after a stressful day or event. BUT I’d be so grateful if you explained disassociation. I’ve had this occur a few times and now it’s more frequent. The first I knew it happened I literally had no idea until afterwards when I was told oh yeah you don’t remember getting punched. No. But I was there with my eyes open and everything …..weird! Then after after doing an emdr session with my therapist I was driving home. Went into a thought so deeply I was t there anymore and when I came out of it it felt like I was going out of a tunnel and I had no idea where I was where I was going what road I was on how long I had been driving. I thought I had fallen asleep but I did not. Since then it’s happened randomly. Not daily or often but it happens. No one seems to understand this or care. And I can’t get any explanation. I truly want to know what is happening to me.

It doesn't make sense because preverbal memories can't be called up, but there's this memory I have of being an infant thinking "what's the point in crying, mom won't come anyways" when I was hungry.

I was always told I was only being good or nice to get what I want to the point where I’ve questioned my own intentions about everything I’ve done in life. I’m much better at not feeling this way anymore but it’s something that feels like I’ll have to work at for the rest of my life

I developed partial DID (osdd), there was emotional neglect from my mom, and my father who was caring for me sexually abused me. I felt like I just don't like my mother and don't want anything from her. But other parts took those feelings and now that I am an adult I do experience them from time to time through them. It's so very confusing all this pain and this feelings that I have never felt when I was a child.

I still get into this cycle in many areas of life despite years of therapy. I hate it. It's very frustrating to intellectually understand this about yourself and still have so much difficulty breaking away from it.
