Professor of 1st Century Judaism and Early Christianity here (and pastor). If you don't have a good grasp of Judaism and the Hebrew scriptures from a Jewish perspective, you will be severely handicapped in your ability to understand the meaning or significance or purpose of almost anything going on in the New Testament, end of story. Of course there's nothing wrong with just bottom lining it and leaving it at that, but for people who really want to understand what they are reading and participating in, it's absolutely critical that you put time and effort into your education about Judaism and their perspective on their scriptures.
