We planned this weekend for months. Countdowns. Outfit texts. Reservations. All of it. She flew to visit me. We live in different states, so this wasn’t just a casual night out. It took coordinating schedules, booking flights, arranging childcare, planning every detail. We were counting down the days. Two moms who rarely get to go out. Two women who were genuinely excited to put on new dresses, do our hair, and feel young and carefree together again. We talked about how fun it would be to relive our twenties for just one night. The first night, we decided to go out. We had four drinks total. We checked the transactions the next day. Four. And we made sure to drink water in between each one and after. We were being intentional. Responsible. Hydrated. At some point, we both lost memory. At the exact same time. And we haven’t gotten it back. We don’t remember being separated. We don’t remember how it happened. We don’t remember who we talked to. What we do know is that at some point, a man full-body punched my best friend. She was bleeding. Disoriented. Confused. We don’t know who called us an Uber. We don’t remember the ride home. Someone put a hoodie on me. I still don’t know who it was. There are hours of our lives missing. What was supposed to be a long-awaited weekend together, time we don’t get often because we live in different states, turned into hospital visits, police reports, and trying to piece together a night we can’t remember. All the plans we had? Gone. The outfits? Never worn again that weekend. The memories we were so excited to make? Replaced with trauma. It’s a strange kind of grief, mourning a night that was taken from you. It’s a different kind of anger, knowing it was caused by a man’s violence. She came to visit me. And our first night together was taken from us. We were excited. We were careful. We were responsible. And our night was still taken from us. #coloradosprings #nightclub #momsnightout #assaultawarness #colorado
