I, too, hated Ashley. He 100% loved the fact that Scarlett was in love with him and did nothing to dissuade it so he could keep that ego boost.

Hattie McDaniel won an Oscar in this film ( the first black person to do so ). She is from Wichita Kansas, my hometown. There is a mural recently painted of her here, it is stunning ❤️

I quote this movie constantly and nobody ever picks up on it. My favorite is “a cat’s a better mother than you are!”

I’ve read the book many times (though I can’t anymore because of the problematic parts), and I have to say: everyone would’ve died of starvation without Scarlett. Every choice she made after she married Charlie was about protecting people, feeding them, and keeping them safe, and that includes Melanie who she didn’t realize how much she loved. Scarlett was selfish, petty, and ALSO badass.

Book Scarlett is a more nuanced character. She is young, vain, and emotionally stunted but driven and money smart. She carried so many families financially through the war and reconstruction and would do anything to survive. Most of her bad side goes back to being unable to truly connect emotionally. Even with Melanie up until the very end.

If you like the mess in the movie, then then you will love the book. And I think the book doesn't romanticize the South like the movie does. The book has its issues, but it's way more nuanced than the movie.

The Zoe Show :
Clark Gable was born in a dinky place called Cadiz, Ohio. I went there a lot as a kid to visit family and all I remember is a giant ass portrait of him on a wall at Wendy’s. Even as a kid I knew Scarlett fumbled.

The book is good as well. The movie completely cuts out Scarlett’s first child, Wade.

Random suggestion: you may like the Irish movie Playboys, where a group of traveling players arrive in a small Irish town and when they run out of material they do Gone with the Wind and it’s amazing.
