After the surrender, Conrad agreed to spare the women inside the castle and allowed them to leave safely with whatever they could carry on their shoulders. Most people expected the women to leave with gold, jewelry, or valuable possessions after the destruction caused by the war. Instead, the women made an unexpected choice. Each wife lifted her husband onto her shoulders and carried him out of the castle. By doing this, they protected the men from possible execution or imprisonment after the battle. Some of Conrad’s soldiers reportedly objected, arguing that the king had not intended for the enemy men to escape. However, Conrad refused to break his promise and honored the agreement. The story later became one of the most famous legends in German history and the castle earned the nickname “Weibertreu,” meaning “faithful wives.” Although historians debate how much of the story is completely accurate, the tale has survived for centuries as a symbol of loyalty, intelligence, and keeping one’s word.
