I love that you compared it to a steampunk gadget because that is the SIMPLEST compound bow possible. They can get so crazy with gauges, sights, aiming apparatuses, recoil dampeners, etc. I'm sure you know this but I thought I'd leave this here for people who don't know much about compound bows.

look up the Oneida Eagle Kestrel, it's a weird thing that kinda combines aspects of a recurve and compound. But most people know it from Arrow lol

The Bushcraft bow from the game the long dark is based on a “cable backed bow from native Penobscot/Wabenaki designs”, one of the first composite bows in history. Not sure if you cover much history but I’d really love to hear your thoughts about this primitive bow, as its design is really striking, and you seem a tiny bit versed in the subject
