@dustythunder_: The one with the HORRIBLE metaphor…👀🔥 “AITA for calling my daughters assorted boyfriends “Baskin Robbin’s”? #redditstory #storytime #reddit_tiktok #redditstories #part1
I think even not saying it directly to her, he is still thinking of her dating in a way that devalues her. I don’t think it’s intentional, and it is really important that he is willing to hear feedback, and it is still something for him to be aware of in the future. Our thoughts can effect how we respond to our children.

I'm 63 & ALWAYS & used the same analogy for dating! I have 6 adult kids, but explained to my 3 daughter's I went to McDonalds & married vanilla soft serve when I should have gone next door to Baskin Robbins & tried a few flavors! They understood what I meant. I WANTED my daughters to date a lot to find the person that most matched their preferences. Its NOT negative.

He's devaluing her and her choices. That is something that should never be said even in private to your spouse. She has a right to look for what she wants and find value through each experience. That's seriously messed up.

The daughter is going through whatever process she needs. She is learning the lessons she needs.I don't think his joke was bad, and he didn't say it to his daughter - it's fine. He's wanting the best for his daughter

He might not have said this directly to his daughter, but he still admitted that he made no effort to learn her boyfriends names.

My grandma used to ask me “ who’s the flavor of the month” when I was a teenager so, I personally think OP is NTA

NTA but we have taught our daughter that there is a difference between dating and having a boyfriend. Having a boyfriend requires open communication between both after they have gotten to know each other through dating. My daughter had a total of 4 dates before becoming serious with one of them. That serious relationship taught her what she really didn’t like in a relationship. She broke up with him and eventually found the boyfriend she is with now who is respectful and loving as well as has open communication with her to help improve their relationship. So yeah dating may equal to a lot of dates it doesn’t mean a ton of boyfriends.

I guess I am also a problem child as I used to tease my son about the "girlfrien of the week". He always laughed.

Every person you date helps define what you’re looking for in a partner. Every relationship helps you to understand how relationships work and don’t work. As long as you’re taking the lessons that come from each relationship, you’re growing as a partner, will choose more compatible partners, and have better relationships. Also, in my opinion, relationships in high school shouldn’t be serious.

I’m curious to know what he considers Disney romance? Because he also compared it to his marriage, which makes me think that it’s realistic a Disney marriage is not.

I like OP’s sense of humor - and if he didn’t say that to the daughter, he is NTA.

My dad made a similar comment when I was in high school, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. It didn’t ruin my life. My dad makes jokes like that and I love and respect him very much. 🤷♀️NTA in my opinion
