We have to remember that while yes she is a very capable person and badass. She is also 12, and blind. And although she uses her feet to see, when she's not on solid ground she is once again blind. And being 12, she feels vulnerable. It is completely normal for a child to rely on others to feel safe. Also, her conversation with Iroh was about how you can rely on others and still be strong
