One thing about tattooing is that a lot of the labor is completely unseen and happens before you sit down in our chair. 1. Work/Life balance is a constant struggle. For many of us, the hardest part of the job is finding the time to do all of the aspects of it to the best of our ability. Even the best among us struggle with maintaining boundaries, order, and time management. For myself, I have young children at home during the day and often have a hard time answering inquiries, drawing designs, and posting on socials during the day because they require so much of my energy and attention. When my husband comes home in the evening, that’s when I head into work to tattoo. Somehow I have to make up the difference in small moments during the day and I constantly feel like I’m neglecting some important aspect of my life. It can be hard. 2. We agonize over small “mistakes” constantly. One of the other difficulties we experience as artists is constant comparison- to our peers, to ourselves, and worst of all- to AI/heavy editing. The art we do walks the line between perfection and reality, constantly contending with what is possible, what is sensible, what is desirable, and what is going to stand the test of time. It is an art that combines technical skill, medical knowledge, and aesthetic sensibility in a way that is wholly unique. The imperfections are what makes the art human, distinctive, and raw. However these imperfections often keep us up at night. We are always wanting to be better, create more perfectly, give the very best of ourselves. We take being our own worst critic to the extreme, and often over things that nobody else would notice but us. 3. We might forget your name, but never the trust you’ve given us. Tattooing brings an immense amount of people into our lives- some just briefly, and some for a long time. New faces, new stories, new designs. Most of the time we spend with you is spent staring at your arm (leg, neck, etc) and not looking directly into your eyes. Between the many people we are servicing, trying to perform our services in the best way possible, and the myriad of things going on in our personal lives, it can be hard to remember some of the details of our previous session. I am embarrassingly bad at remembering names. What I don’t forget is the time we spend together. I remember the vulnerability that we shared- talking about family life, sharing birth stories, laughing about work happenings. You come to me to celebrate your graduation, to mourn your loved one, to claim your body anew. And I cherish that to a degree I could never explain. I am grateful and humbled to be the person you choose to spend this time with and to have this trust you place in me. From the bottom of my heart I thank you. I might not remember your name but I’ll never forget you.
