How does it not make sense? It makes perfect sense

How does keeping an equation even on both sides not make sense?

So what is the new way? I'm struggling to come up with an alternative that "makes sense".

People in these comments are missing the point. The professor isn’t saying “get x by itself” is wrong or doesn’t make sense, he’s saying that for first-time learners, that instruction can feel arbitrary unless you explain why you’re doing it.
Experienced people already understand what equations represent, so the method feels obvious in hindsight. But beginners often just see a sequence of rules to memorize.
Teaching it as “what number times 3, plus 4, gives 28?” gives students a conceptual reason for the algebraic steps instead of just telling them to isolate x.

i always fail to understand why we need to find x so much. just leave x alone.

It makes perfect sense. Stop making things more complicated than it needs to be

It’s math, it doesn’t have to make “sense”. Numbers don’t lie

we drove cars and don't understand exactly how it all works. but we do it and it's fine.

Both sides are equal. Doing the same thing to both sides is making sense of it. What even is that last comment?

I thought you moved the 4 over to the 28 and flip the sign 3x= 28-4
3x=24
divide both sides by 3
x=8

You make sense of the problem by solving for x. How do you do this? You have to isolate x.

If you're solving for x, wouldn't the goal be to "get x by itself"?

It's not about making sense, it's about developing problem solving skills.... Creating a step by step process that can not only be applied to mathematics but everything else.
