Humans are only upright apes. We think ourselves higher. We hold ourselves to higher standards. But, for naked upright apes, I think we're doing well enough to have some pride, honestly. I believe if chimps or even bonobos had gone on to dominate the world instead of us, one might find that the world is not as much more harmonious as some misanthropes would claim. Very little is uniquely human. Not empathy or cruelty. Not memory or subconscious cognition. Not ego or gender or hierarchy, not creation and not destruction either. We are dominant apes, surely. But only apes.
