I have a theoretical question: if Henrietta Lacks had found out that her cells had the potential to lead to many scientific discoveries and save many many lives but she did not want these studies to go ahead, would it have been ethical for the researchers to stop their research, even knowing it could save many people? I’m confused about the ethics here. Sorry if I am being stupid

I'm doing a biochem course at Uni rn and we actually had a conversation about this (animal protections students, we talk a lot about ethics). I really appreciated my professor actually bringing her up properly

Actively stopping the family finding out on purpose is wild. I hate this world

I didnlearn about her in one of my university biochemistry courses. Her story always stuck with me. I was shocked by the lack of consent and medical gatekeeping from her family. But I am glad schools are now teaching about her

i’m currently getting a bachelor’s in sociology and, while it may be bittersweet to know, many of the numerous ethics courses i have taken discuss Henrietta Lacks to exemplify the importance of informed, ongoing consent in ALL fields of research❤️i hope that learning about her story prevents other researchers from using the same unethical practices in years to come. it’s so difficult to learn about how many women, especially black and indigenous women, have experienced something like this. however, it’s crucial to learn the real-life implications of unethical/non-consensual research. thank you for continuing to share her story🫶

READ THE BOOK The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. It is an incredible story, and no, the Oprah movie doesn’t come close to capturing her and her family’s story.
