@misfit_printing: I’m obsessed with the idea of a dirty martini lava lamp but we seem to be hitting a wall with getting the olives suspended in the lamp 🤔 I do think there are a few other things we can try before abandoning this idea but If you have any life me know #lavalamps #3dprinting #resin3dprinting #dirtymartini
You and that Lego lamp guy are having the opposite problems🤣🤣

love it. print them hollow but with varying wall thicknesses so you can identify a weight that is more neutrally buoyant.

I used to make resin ttrpg dice and we did a magic 8 ball style DnD healing potion. In order to get the dice to float ALL the way to the top I believe we used a 4 to 1 ratio of salt to water. Dissolve the salt in the water on the stove top. you can essentially start with like a 1.5:1 then test, add a half cup or cup or whatever, Dissolve, test, etc. Hopefully that makes sense thats basically what we did to find our salt density.

I'm assuming the olives are solid resin. Can you print hollow olives to make them lighter?

The cured resin density is about 1.2-1.6 g/cm^3. Saturated salt water is about 1.03 g/cm^3. You need to find a way to reduce the density of the olives. Based on a guess about the size of those, you need to reduce their mass by about 30% while keeping the volume the same. You can't just drill or print a hole in them, you have to keep the outer shell integrity so the liquid from the lamp cannot get inside. Can you print them hollow with a hole on one end and print a red cap to fit snuggly in that hole while not filling the hole?

Hollow out your olives, it will lower their density

you can dissolve a lot more Epsom salt in water than regular salt!!!

Alice in 3D :
add a small bubble to the olive model with a hole under the pimento, seal the hole when you paint. should make them a little buoyant and add a little chaos to the motion

print a hollow test batch with different wall thicknesses to find one that's buoyant or almost buoyant with regular water?

could you drill little holes in the Olives to make them more floaty? you could make it an X like where the top of the fancy olives

Asked my husband who 3D prints, he stated make them slightly hollow to reduce the weight and or cover it with silicone. The gem crystal lamp, the gems were smaller, try making tiny olives.
