Despite facing a court martial and firing squad, German BF-109 pilot Franz Stigler chose mercy and spared this B-17 and its crew from certain death. On December 20, 1943, a heavily damaged American B-17 named Ye Olde Pub struggled through the skies over Nazi-occupied Europe after a brutal raid on Bremen. Flak and fighters had torn the aircraft apart. Two engines were damaged, the tail gunner was dead, several crewmen were wounded, and much of the bomber’s defensive armament was gone. At the controls was 2nd Lt. Charlie Brown, flying his very first combat mission. As the bomber limped home, a lone German fighter pulled alongside. It was flown by Franz Stigler, a Luftwaffe ace with more than 20 kills. From a tactical standpoint, the B-17 was helpless. One burst of cannon fire would have finished it. But when Stigler looked inside, he saw wounded men and fear on their faces. He later said it felt like looking into a hospital plane. Instead of firing, Stigler tried to signal Brown to land and surrender. Brown refused and kept flying. Realizing the bomber wouldn’t go down, Stigler made a decision that could have cost him his life. He escorted the enemy aircraft. Flying formation, Stigler shielded the B-17 from German flak until they reached the North Sea. There, he saluted Charlie Brown and peeled away, knowing he could be executed for what he’d done. Against all odds, the B-17 made it back to England. Nearly 50 years later, Brown tracked down the unknown German pilot. The two men finally met in 1990 and became lifelong friends, remaining close until their deaths in 2008. A reminder that even in war, humanity can still fly
