I’ve made ten jars like this, crimson pots, thrown crimson clay that’ll eventually be coated in a crimson glaze and then finally, they’ll be reduction fired, oh, there’s also some bronze in the mix, small fragments, which when put through the kiln turn into these red haloed flecks of metal. All of that might sound quite over the top but it’s a deep red with underlying tones of black and hopefully they resemble some of the tests I’ve fired in the past… fingers crossed. They require a different approach when crafting them, especially during the turning stage. As the particles of grog the body contains are constantly torn out I have to go back over the surface, burnishing it and smoothing it as I go to get rid of the overly prominent scratches these splinters of ceramic create. I lost a few pieces from attempting to fix oval openings, they were thrown round, but as clay slowly dries it’s quite common for it to subtlety warp. I tried to gentle press the opening back into a round shape and I felt something give; upon further inspection I found a hairline crack in the rim. Grogged clays might be tough during the throwing and the firing but it’s brittle stuff during the trimming stage, especially when trimmed as thinly as this. #clay #handmade #satisfying #pottery #ceramics
