@theculturedump: The Marquis De Sade (1740-1814) is one of the most notorious writers of all time. He was a French nobleman, a libertine, a criminal, and a pornographer — and I would only read his writings at your peril. While he was imprisoned in the Bastille, he wrote one of the most obscene pieces of literature ever written: ‘120 days of Sodom’. When the Bastille was stormed during the French Revolution, he had to leave it in a secret cubbyhole in his cell. Somehow, someone managed to retrieve it and it was published later… Anyway, as an artistic and literary figure, he raises an interesting question: when it comes to art, how far is too far? #History #BookTok #bookstagram #literature #marquisdesade

he’s such a weird person to read because you’re navigating stuff that is horrific but then because his view were SO extreme you’ll happen upon something that we consider really progressive nowadays, it’s just BIZARRE but super interesting if you can stomach it

I guess it boils down to where the ticker sits on the areas of acceptability, where you place your own moralising, and what do you accept/reject of yourself/current and fluctuating social norms. I’m so pleased you shared this. I like hearing about your passions. It makes for a wider discussion. Thank you. ✨

His writing is so interesting. And I love the movie Wuills. Because the battle is always there for artists.

It’s so funny because, yes, the subject matter is extreme but he’s a terrible writer. For all his money and resources he could barely string a sentence together. His books would never make it off Ao3 today.

outside 120 days of Sodom, the rest of his works are halfway decent when hes not trying to be controversial edge lord

I found Justine interesting, but never moved on to 120 Days. Society sets limits to activities in real life. Blocking or burning works of art is far more problematic

Seems as if the only value was in its extreme sadism as the writing

Tried reading 120 days of sodom and couldn’t get past the first 50 pages. It’s explicit, graphic and highly disturbing child abuse. Whatever nuances of artistic expression it might have were diluted in the sheer horror of it. Truly the work of a disturbed mind. There is a difference between libertinism and whatever mental illness he had going on.
