The ouroboros is one of the most popular ancient symbols of all time. Its origins come from ancient Egyptian iconography, with the oldest depiction being on Tutankhamen’s tomb. The Ouroboros depicts a snake or a dragon in a circle eating its own tail. The word ‘Ouroboros’ means tail devourer in greek. The iconography entered western tradition through greek alchemists in Alexandria. In its original Egyptian context it symbolized renewal, repetition and the eternity of time, while in later western alchemical usage its symbolism shifted to stand for eternity, endless return, and the unity of time’s beginning and end. “I wanted to swallow myself by opening my mouth inordinately and turning it around over my head so that it would take in my whole body, and then the Universe, until all that would remain of me would be a ball of eaten thing which little by little would be annihilated: that is my way of seeing the end of the world” (Jean Genet, Our Lady of the Flowers, 1943) #ouroboros #uroboros #moodboard #symbolism #ancientegypt
