my interpretation is that the tree is a parasitic creature that uses the illusion of safety created by it's trunk to lure in it's victims. we can see the rabbit is transforming into a cutesy, cartoon version of itself as it enters the trunk, so we can assume the "fairies" don't look like how they appear inside the tree either. I think they are actually the 3 strange "roots" of the tree. the fairies all have wide smiles like the root creatures, and one fairy even has extra long limbs, like the roots of the tree
