I’m gonna be Portland poor. They have awesome studios and one bedrooms at income restricted pricing. Good enough for me. I wanna be close to the Goonies and Twin Peaks 😋

I think rent should be capped at 30% of the median income of an area. People shouldn’t be able to treat housing as a business.

This is exactly why I moved lol. Being broke AND hating where you live feels worse.

NYC poor is fabulous. I have a library card, which gives you a culture pass - free museums. Then get a slice on the cheap. $3 subway fare. $35 max per week for subway. It's awesome.

The answer to this dillema is Chicago. Chi is cheap enough not to break you and you get everything any top 10 city in the world has to offer. But the winters are brutal..

The big thing keeping everyone poor is the car. It’s not JUST that cars are expensive to buy, insure, fuel, and maintain. But building everything for the car makes everything more expensive. More taxes for roads. Businesses have to build and maintain massive parking lots, and they pass those costs to you. Same thing with your rents, which factor in your parking.

Small towns are no longer affordable either. Affordability is not an "urban" issue. Why can't people focus on anything outside of their periphery

I live in Chicago and it’s heartbreaking to see us losing our affordability every year. It’s out of control

As someone from a “walkable” city that’s currently being gentrified, yes.

"Pick your poor" just sounds like a capitalistic rhetoric that reinforces your original statement. The illusion of choice to be in different areas (and still be poor) is justified in the way that people can supposedly "choose" to be in areas that have higher cultural indexes, yet it doesn't account for moving costs, general bases of living, nor failure outcomes. In the example of L.A. it is not really walkable (it's barely drivable), it has egregious housing costs, and extremely mistreats "social failures" like homelessness. We shouldn't have to pick between affordability and culture, we SHOULD have both.

Baltimore and Detroit feel like the only “big cities” left that are actually affordable. Bought my 4/3.5 house for 250k. I love Baltimore 🥰

The biggest factor you left out of this video is weather. Yes Syracuse is an affordable city, but the weather is mostly awful. It’s difficult to walk around and experience vibrancy in a city if everyone’s inside all the time because it’s miserable outside.
