Yesterday, I had the opportunity to instruct at an acquired structure burn thanks to John Fogg. Even as an instructor, the lessons learned are invaluable. Every evolution provides an opportunity to better understand building construction, fire behavior, decision-making, and the impact our actions have on fireground conditions. One of the most rewarding parts of this profession is the ability to teach and give back to the next generation of firefighters. I’ve been fortunate throughout my career to learn from incredible mentors who believed in paying it forward, and I try to do the same whenever I have the opportunity. This short clip highlights the importance of door control and demonstrates how quickly conditions can change inside a fire room. Watch the rollover develop and consider how a simple action can influence the environment, fire growth, and firefighter safety. It also reinforces the importance of conducting acquired structure burns the right way. When properly planned, coordinated, and executed, acquired structures provide training opportunities that simply cannot be replicated in a burn building. They allow firefighters to experience real-world building layouts, realistic fire behavior, and the challenges that come with operating in actual structures. These burns are a tremendous training asset, but only when they are conducted safely, professionally, and in accordance with established standards. Training like this reminds us that the fire doesn’t care about our opinions it only responds to physics, fuel, ventilation, and our actions. Thankful for the opportunity to learn, teach, and continue paying it forward. #FireService #LiveFireTraining #AcquiredStructure #FireBehavior #DoorControl
