Something I don’t see anyone mentioning is that they were not on a research vessel. They were on the Duke of York, a 36m luxury liveaboard yacht with around 20 other passengers who were there on vacation. The yacht has a boutique, bar, and restaurant and is around $3,500 per person for 7 days. University funded research isn’t paying for you to stay on a yacht.

As a diver, you could have 20,000 dives but if it’s at shallower depths or less technical-then you have the equivalent of zero dives. Just because you’ve driven a car 1000 times doesn’t mean you can fly a plane.

the thing i keep hearing is “experienced divers” bro this is cave diving. is different to diving with the fish. 20 years of diving won’t prep you for cave diving.

She was warned by the locals to have someone who knew the caves with her. She was asked to respect that and she believed that her knowledge was somehow applicable everywhere. What she did was the equivalent of “I hike all the time, I could probably do Everest”. Her arrogance killed her.

Can you confirm if they were experienced OPEN WATER divers or CAVE divers! They are diff certifications and diff equipment. I heard they were only open water certified and hadn’t cave dived before
