Muslim is simply the active participle of that verb—meaning "one who submits their will to God." It is a description of a theological stance, not a 7th-century cultural club. By definition, every single prophet—from Adam, Noah, and Abraham, to Moses and Jesus—was a Muslim. They didn't preach submission to themselves; they preached absolute submission to the Creator.
