Update: Medicaid absolutely refuses to replace anything including medication. The DHHS was more understand since the money wasn’t income and it replaced everything we lost. The first supervisor I spoke to was just rude and wrong.

I'm still mad that if I sell a car the money counts as income but if I buy a car it doesn't count as an expense, in a county with no public transit options

I’m a former Medicaid supervisor and yea unfortunately if you have any type of renters/home owners insurance you have to go through them first which sucks because they can be slow. Medicaid is always secondary to other insurances. As for the donations, that can put you over, I don’t know what your income is but it would usually have to be a significant amount. A way to avoid that is if someone is helping you with rent, groceries, have them pay your rent directly to your landlord or buy the groceries for you instead of giving you cash.

Hey so I used to write appeals to Medicaid for those exact reasons if you need some help with appeals!

I think it's probably because the homeowners or rental insurance should pay for it? So they think if they pay for it that your double dipping if you claim it as a loss on you policy.

Yes the donations thing is frustrating as my wife and I rely on mutual aid. She was told she can’t use Medicaid next year

Call the Red Cross. They can usually help after a fire.

comments are full of ignorant, entitled, and privileged assholes 🙄 how predictable.
I'm adding that you may be able to contact the AG in your state if you continue to suffer and get denials. they may be able to pull strings, but they take a bit to respond too (my complaint took nearly a month) so maybe file a complaint with them? 💜💜 I hope you're sleeping safely 😖

people don’t realize the amount of loopholes that exist like this in the system to keep the poor even more poor. it’s exhausting constantly trying to fight tooth & nail for financial stability only to constantly be knocked back down

Ugh, makes zero sense. It's like something automated is making the decisions not something with a heart and brain. Things are so backwards. I'm sorry Steph. 💙

Haven Hospice thrift stores carries ALOT of medical supplies and equipment that ppl nd facilities donate it to them and they will either give it to u or if they charge then it's like not even 1/4 of what u would have to pay. . but considering ur situation they will give it to u

Red Cross and so will Medicaid. Our house was destroyed in a flood. Donations are just that donations as long as you don’t receive money on a continuous basis from the same person

look for a place that gives out donated medical equipment. we have a place here called "John's Way" that gets all kinds of medical devices/equipment donated to them from families who no longer need them and they give them to those in need
