FROM: Congratulations... You Remade Your Own Mistakes.
I started watching From thinking, "Finally. The people behind Lost must have learned after twenty years."
By Season 4, I realized they did learn something.
How to make the same mistakes with a bigger budget.
1. Their writing philosophy is simple:
"Never answer a question when you can invent five more."
Every episode feels like the writers are terrified the audience might actually understand what's going on.
"Oh no... they're figuring it out!"
Quick.
Add a creepy kid.
Make the sky explode.
Throw in a vision.
Done.
Crisis averted.
2. Every important clue gets sent straight to the cemetery.
Character: "I finally know what's happening!"
Writers:
"Excellent. Kill him."
Or better...
Let him survive...
Then make him completely forget to mention it ever again.
At this point, the biggest mystery isn't the town.
It's how nobody remembers yesterday's plot.
3. The plot is losing?
Don't worry.
Here's another life.
Another timeline.
Another vision.
Another "chosen one."
Because nothing screams great storytelling like abandoning the current story to start an entirely different one.
4. The supernatural has become comedy.
The sky flashes.
The weather changes.
The forest moves.
The crows scream.
People hallucinate.
Dogs appear.
Children whisper.
Trees teleport.
Why?
...
We'll get back to you in Season 9.
Maybe.
5. And then... they actually did it.
The Man in Yellow.
The Boy in White.
I actually paused the episode.
Not because I was shocked.
Because I wanted to make sure Netflix hadn't accidentally switched me back to Lost.
Seriously?
Another ancient supernatural chess match between mysterious beings dressed in symbolic colors?
What's next?
A smoke monster with a different paint job?
The funniest part is that the writers probably think this is brilliant.
It isn't.
Creating mysteries is easy.
Every ten-year-old can make up a mystery.
The hard part is explaining it without insulting your audience.
So far, From is doing what Lost did best:
Convincing people that the next episode will finally answer everything...
while quietly preparing twelve brand-new questions instead
