it’s not a coincidence that the best part of social media these days is the comments section. They truly are the only part that still feel “social”!! Everything else just feels like an ad being thrown in your place. People still crave community.

As a millennial… once we got away from “add as a friend” to “following” without them having to follow back, was when we lost the plot. Social media moved away from its original purpose which was to connect friends via the internet to a popularity contest with one never ending ad (selling you a lifestyle that feels attainable simply because it’s in the palm of your hand even tho its not ) to keep you engaged.

i think there was also a huge difference on apps having different purposes like to us vine was for quick entertainment, youtube was for longer entertainment, instagram felt like connecting with friends and facebook was for connecting with family. now everything is just smushed together. “entertainment” everywhere. like youtube shorts. instagram reels. tik toks. tik toks having a whole shop. instagram being full of influencers. youtube having way more ads. the same apps we use to connect with our friends are now just distracting us to receive other media and ignore the people we actually know when the purpose was to connect with them.

Basically Capitalism overtook it, and everything became monetized/ transactional. You don't even have to go back to the 2010s to see this. It happened right here on TikTok between 2019 and 2023/ 2024ish. Pre-pandemic Tik Tok was somewhat niche and even looked down upon. Then COVID happened and everyone got on and suddenly it was the most popular social media app. Now it was competing with Meta and YouTube. Once they rolled out Tik Tok shop, monetized live streaming, and the "Sale" happened, it was wraps. It hasn't felt the same since.
