@twoparentsandapod: OK we’ve been seeing this bedtime hack EVERYWHRE online - if your kid wants to stay up past bedtime, they get TWO options: 🏃♀️ JOG the entire time 📚 READ the entire time In theory we LOVE it, but… does it actually work?? #twoparentsandapod #parentinghack #bedtime #parentsofinstagram #parentingtips
Don’t do this, you might accidentally raise an elite high IQ athlete

If you want your children to live long healthy lives, DO NOT make physical activity a punishment. Celebrate physical activity instead.

Wait you’re not punishing them, you’re giving them 3 options to choose from. 1. Sleep 2. Read or 3. Exercise? It’s giving them freedom to choose instead of forcing them to pick sleep

I tell my daughter if she wants to stay up she needs to do the chores that I do after she goes to bed, since I will not have time to do them now. She always chooses to go to bed and is usually asleep within 5 minutes.

Counter point: the parents in this scenario did not turn running or reading into a punishment, but rather an assignment based on the child asking to stay up past their bedtime maybe the next step would just be to explain that if you want to stay up past your bedtime, you need to either do something that’s going to burn energy or something that is going to challenge your mind.

My son does track and my daughter is an avid reader. Neither option would work for us.

lol if my mom had done this with me I never would’ve slept. I was always reading. She actually had to ground me from reading 😂😂

If my daughter is staying up past her bed time she can’t be on her phone or watching tv. She can do anything else reading, puzzles, writing anything creative.

As a child that would’ve stayed up all night to finish a book lol it backfires

We have our kids “get their zoomies out” before bed. I say an animal and they try to run around the house like that animal would

the problem with running is, it'll actually not wear them out like you think.
it will hinder them from going to sleep for longer than expected by amping up their energy

This would not have helped for me. I WANTED to stay up to read more 🤣

When my kids got to a certain age, and bedtime was 8:30, it was ok if they didn’t want to go to sleep but here was the deal….i don’t want to see you, hear you or know you. You have to stay in your room (they didn’t have tv’s in their rooms and no cell phones) I have no idea what they did and it literally didn’t matter to me in the slightest

My kids need to be in their rooms but I can’t force them to sleep. They don’t have devices in their room so they just end up reading or playing quietly.

So you need to change the phrasing. “Your body isn’t ready for bed? Let’s run some energy out! Your brain isn’t ready for rest? Let’s read.”

Parents did the read thing and found me in bed many times at 3 am still reading. I was reading a book a week at that point. This was 8th grade.

Why are people giving kids options to things that aren’t options? You don’t want to go to bed - fine, you don’t have to go to sleep but you need to be in bed for your body to rest.

I used to take my kids out for a walk at 6:15. I called it, Getting our wiggles out. They would skip, sing, walk silly and it was great. Then home, wash up, pjs and into bed with a story…lights out.

My kids can read in bed… It’s not a punishment. It’s just an option that they can do if they’re not tired.

Don’t do this! Your child could read all night long and not get sleep. I am the child that would read all night

For us, bedtime was about making sure our kids got enough sleep for their health. A downside of letting kids choose their own bedtime is that they may not know how much sleep they need. Staying up too late can lead to tiredness, poor focus, mood swings, and stressful routines. It may also cause confusion about rules in general. Our kids thrived with structure.
