“Be like water.” Bruce Lee made four finished films and changed the world with them. He was 32 when he passed away. Born in San Francisco, raised in Hong Kong. He was a child actor there, in about twenty films before he was eighteen. Also a Hong Kong cha-cha champion, which people always forget. He got into enough street fights that his parents sent him back to America at eighteen with around a hundred dollars. He worked as a waiter, taught martial arts out of a car park, went to university in Seattle and studied philosophy. That part matters. Everything he later wrote about fighting came out of it. Hollywood wouldn't cast him. He was told American audiences wouldn't accept an Asian lead. He pitched a series about a wandering martial artist, the studio made it, and gave the role to a white actor. So he went back to Hong Kong and made The Big Boss, Fist of Fury, Way of the Dragon and Enter the Dragon instead, and became the biggest star in Asia almost immediately. He also built his own martial art, Jeet Kune Do, around one idea: take what works, throw away what doesn't, and don't be loyal to a style. Half of modern MMA runs on that thinking. The look is as fixed as anything in film. Black trousers, no shirt, or a plain tracksuit. The yellow jumpsuit. Nothing else needed. He's probably the most imitated physique of the last century and he weighed about sixty-four kilos. He died in July 1973, a month before Enter the Dragon came out. He never saw what it did. Fifty years on and nobody has replaced him. RIP to one of the greatest. Find Highball's free newsletter in our bio. We find things worth your attention. 🔗 #cinema #mensfashion
