HOW TO BUILD A BUSINESS GOD’S WAY Some of the principles I’ve used to build my businesses are principles I first learned through Scripture. Here’s how I actually apply them — and how you can apply them to your business. 1. DIVERSIFICATION — ECCLESIASTES 11:2 “Give portions to seven, yes to eight…” Don’t build a business that relies on one service. Look at what you currently offer and split it into two categories: GENERALIST: What is the everyday service that the majority of people can understand and buy? SPECIALIST: Where could your expertise solve a more complex problem, serve a specific industry, or operate where there is more money flowing? For example: General cleaning → specialist healthcare cleaning General logistics → specialist medical logistics General marketing → specialist healthcare marketing The generalist creates volume. The specialist creates differentiation, higher barriers to entry and often higher margins. ACTION: Take your current service and write down 3 specialist versions of it. Then investigate which industry has the biggest problem, the most money and the least competition. ⸻ 2. THE JOSEPH PRINCIPLE — GENESIS 41 Joseph recognised that the years of abundance wouldn’t last forever. So he didn’t spend everything during the good years. He stored. Business owners often think: “I made £100k. What can I take out?” Instead ask: “How much of this can I put back into making the business stronger?” You need money for: * Slow periods * Unexpected costs * Staff * Equipment * Marketing * Opportunities * Expansion ACTION: Look at your last 12 months of business income and calculate your average monthly operating costs. Then set a target for your business reserve. Don’t wait for a crisis to decide you need one. ⸻ 3. THE JAR OF OIL — 2 KINGS 4 The widow didn’t have everything she needed. She had oil. Other people had the containers. The miracle happened through what she already had — combined with resources she could access. This is one of the biggest business lessons I’ve learned: You don’t always need to own the resource. Sometimes you need to know who already has it. Partnerships. Outsourcing. White-label services. Strategic suppliers. Existing infrastructure. Want to build a global logistics company? You don’t necessarily need to own aircraft, warehouses and delivery networks across the world. You can leverage companies that already have them while you build the brand, customer relationship, expertise and coordination layer. ACTION: Write down everything you currently believe you need to buy, hire or build. Then beside each one ask: “Who already has this that I could partner with?” You may discover you’re trying to build things you could simply access. ⸻ 4. BUILD WITH THE END IN MIND — LUKE 14:28 Jesus talks about counting the cost before building. That’s exactly how I think about systems. Don’t wait until you’re overwhelmed to build infrastructure. If you’re going from £100k → £1m → £3m, ask: “What will break first?” Your customer service? Your invoicing? Your staff communication? Your bookings? Your reporting? Your documentation? Then build the system before the problem arrives. For example, using a proper ticketing system means customer enquiries aren’t sitting in someone’s WhatsApp, email inbox or memory. ACTION: Take your last 10 recurring problems. If the same problem has happened more than once, ask: “Can I create a system so this doesn’t depend on a person remembering what to do?” That’s your next SOP, automation or system. ⸻ 5. THE HIDDEN TREASURE — MATTHEW 13:44 A man finds treasure hidden in a field and sells everything to buy it. Why? Because he understands the value of what is inside the field. This changed the way I think about pricing. Stop asking: “Would I pay that?” You’re not your customer. Your customer may value: Convenience. Speed. Expertise. Access. Peace of mind. Risk reduction. Status. Time saved. ACTION: Take your highest-priced service. Write down exactly what the customer is actually buying beyond the physical product or service. Join my community of business owners! What resonated ?
