Thing is, often being stable on medications means we end up saving the NHS money in appts and hospital visits. Messing with things like inhalers to save a bit can send asthma sufferers to A&E and then you’ve lost all the savings immediately 🤷♀️

years ago I got an injection for tennis elbow. worked amazing no problem. the issue has come back and no apparently they no longer inject elbows. I got offered pain killers instead. so instead of one injection every 5-10 years i need medication monthly. make it make sense

I was asked about taking 2 doxazosin 4mg tablets in place of one 8mg tablet when my dose increased. £1.56 for 56 4mg tablets, £41.51 for 28 8mg tablets. doesnt make much difference to me so I agreed to taking the 4mg tabs

This all feels a little pointless making GPs do this with medicine while the NHS procurement system is literally throwing money in the bin. You can only purchase products from the particular agreed supplier even if a pair of scissors is costing £20 but you could get it from many other suppliers for £5. Honestly I totally get it every little helps so let’s not waste money on branded medicines when they can be cheaper…but if we’re not doing it with anything else it just feels like a waste of everyone’s time

I was called by the GP who wanted to review my child’s medications to see if they could save money. Absolutely fine, but my child is very complex needs, palliative care, over 40 items on repeat prescription. Was told if we swap antihistamine from cetirizine to Loratadine it would save £5 per year. The GP went through every single item and this was the only option to swap. The call was 40 odd minutes. How much did a GPs time cost though - it doesn’t make sense 🙈. Interestingly one of our items is lidocaine patches…

It’s a bit of a false economy. Staying stable is a hell of a lot cheaper than a hospital stay.

serious question why is paracetamol or ibuprofen included on anyone's prescription are they a higher strength than over the counter? or could these just be dropped except in cases where someone couldn't get to the shop themselves obviously.

Maybe the pharmaceutical companies need to be held to account more and not allowed to make huge profits and not paying GP's bonus payments for at least two vaccines that are given in the winter.

an exchange of curt emails occurred when the neurologist changed me from a cheap AED to a pricy one as the GP has to pick up the cost for this. Made me feel they were arguing over if my life was worth the price

Things like gaviscon some of them I would be happy to pay for things. I get given things I later find out i could have bought it and didn’t realise. Making people aware they can buy certain things. Sometimes just letting people know they can

I heard that the NHS are wildly spending on unnecessary office equipment that they can't be bothered to change suppliers. How about we cut costs here too?

Sometimes brands matter though. Like insulin needles. The cheaper ones are awful, they hurt more, leave bruises, and there are far more defective ones than the more expensive alternatives

Try being in chronic pain. I have arthritis, RA and fibro as well as 3 autoimmune conditions. This week in pain management therapy I was told if the pain is unbearable hug someone. Talk about patronising. I’ve had chronic pain for over 40 years due to birth defects. I don’t think a hug is going to cut it 🥺

My gp tried to cut one of my creams saying “ nhs have stopped prescribing this” when I challenged the health board on the reasons behind this and asked to see a dermatologist suddenly I was prescribed it 😬🙄😳

I know it’s all to do with funding. But KPIs for reducing spend seems counter-intuitive to giving excellent healthcare 😭😂

More otc meds need to be available. I went to Lanzarote and the range of otc meds for sale in the pharmacy that would only be px in this country was unbelievable. If they’re safe to buy there, then they’re safe to buy here. That would stop unnecessary prescription costs.

My lidocaine plasters have been cancelled because they are too expensive. It was the only thing that worked for my chronic pain. 😢
