@wesleyfestersa: Refugees evicted from UNHCR office in Cape Town | Archives Cape Town, South Africa - 30 October 2019: Riot police led an operation to evict refugees and asylum seekers from the UNHCR offices in Cape Town. The foreign nationals had occupied the offices several weeks ago, demanding repatriation to countries like Canada, claiming they were victims of violent crime and xenophobia in South Africa. Police issued a warning and gave them 30 minutes to pick up their belongings and leave the premises. After the expiry of the dispersal a clash erupted between men in the crowd and riot police. Police started arresting people and used flash bangs and rubber bullets to evict the crowd. Police cleared the area the refugees had occupied. Through an intervention many in the crowd were given refuge in the nearby Central Methodist Church.
