Tracks used to be 440 yards, so yeah, 4x laps were a mile.

When I was in high school in the early 1980s the track was 440 yards around, which is a quarter mile. 2 laps was 880 yards and 4 laps 1760 yard or 1 mile. the races were 100 yards 220 yards, 440 yards and 1 mile.. so, even with metric, sixteen hundred meters is only ten meters short of a mile. and that is four laps
