They typically change them with every oil change and recommend them without even checking if it needs to be replaced. It’s probably not malicious.

Cabin filter is behind the glovebox. Our shop doesn’t check it because people have stuff in there. It’s recommended based on mileage. There’s no magic report log of every service done on the car. So if it wasn’t done at another dealer or reported on carfax we don’t know if you did it. FYI they aren’t mind readers

I just ordered a cabin air filter off Amazon, cost me $13.63. Will take about 30 seconds to replace myself. Fuck all that

Im a service advisor my techs pull out the filter to see if its needed if the filter is clean they don’t recommend it if it’s kinda dirty they let me know and I ask the customer when they got it done and if it’s really dirty they recommend it and they always provide pictures as well or will show the filter to the customer yes filters are due by time and mileage but we also gotta be honest with the customers which is why dealerships have the reputation of ripping of customers

mechanic writer here..a lot of the recommendations are also based off of mileage, so if the work you did wasn't reported on carfax it doesn't think it ever got changed.

I don't trust "service advisors" because they are salespeople, and not mechanics. I have personally seen advisors recommend parts like spark plugs at 60-70k or so, when the owner's manual says 100k. 30-40,000 miles is like 2-4 years of average driving.

Technically it’s not the writers fault, management pushes us to sell as much as possible, 90% of the time they arnt even checked and just written up as bad- former quick lane for ford but never again after I found out how shady dealerships are

@devinmorin11: Coming from a tech at a Mercedes Benz, we can only see what’s been done to the car at other Benz dealerships. So if you go to an independent and got it done. Then bring it in too the dealership, I’m not going under the dash to pull it and check im recommend it because I don’t see it done in our database.

it's called scheduled maintenance, and if you're going to somewhere that they write it down on a little sheet with red yellow and green boxes to check you need to leave anyway. video inspections have been around for years

I took my Kia in for them to fix the safety issue things and put an antitheft ignition a few years back and they wanted me to do an oil change and replace both air filters for over $300.. no thanks.

I’m a tech and I hate when other techs recommend based off “mileage” instead of physically checking it that’s why I always send pictures with my recommendations showing why and not based off mileage
