Married 32 years. The only two pieces of marriage advice I ever have, one is pretty easy to do, and the other... some people don't like.
.
The easy one is, recognize that you are a team. You can't win an argument, you can't lose an argument: you win together, or you lose together. My favorite saying is Japanese: a husband and wife, working together, can bail out the ocean.
.
The hard one is: never lie. Ever. About anything, no matter how big or small. Don't lie just to keep the peace, don't lie because you're too tired to fight right now, don't even lie to spare their feelings. This is very hard to do; especially in the beginning, it feels impossible. But if you can do this, your spouse will know, for an absolute fact, not just a hope, that you're telling her the truth. And that trust is more valuable to your marriage than gold.
